THEME: The Schoolboy

William Blake

The Schoolboy

From Songs of Experience
I love to rise in a summer morn,
When the birds sing on every tree;
The distant huntsman winds his horn,
And the skylark sings with me:
O what sweet company!

But to go to school in a summer morn, -
O it drives all joy away!
Under a cruel eye outworn,
The little ones spend the day
In sighing and dismay.

Ah then at times I drooping sit,
And spend many an anxious hour;
Nor in my book can I take delight,
Nor sit in learning's bower,
Worn through with the dreary shower.

How can the bird that is born for joy
Sit in a cage and sing?
How can a child, when fears annoy,
But droop his tender wing,
And forget his youthful spring!

O father and mother if buds are nipped,
And blossoms blown away;
And if the tender plants are stripped
Of their joy in the springing day,
By sorrow and care's dismay, -

How shall the summer arise in joy,
Or the summer fruits appear?
Or how shall we gather what griefs destroy,
Or bless the mellowing year,
When the blasts of winter appear?

THEME: The theme of the poem is children's inborn felling of oneness with nature. Another important theme of the poem is the negative site of formal learning. The restrictions put by school rob children off their childhood happiness. too much " dos and don'ts" acts like a hurdle for the natural expression of creativity.

Your childhood memories – Composition

Your childhood memories – Composition Childhood is the sweetest and happiest of human life. Each and every man or woman has some childhood memories. I have also some memorable memories of my childhood. Sometimes, these sweet memories peep in my mind while I am alone. So, childhood is an important and joyful part of human life. Playing games in the playground is a most memorable incident of my childhood. I spent my childhood in our village home. Our village stands on the river Meghna. There is a playground behind our house. It is a large and open play ground. I use to play football, ha-du-do, golachut and many other popular games with my playmates there. Every afternoon I spend playing games there. Ziaul Haq was my most bosom friend. We used to play together, we used to swim and fish in the river together. We also used to go to school together. Sometimes I returned home late. Mother would scold me for this. Plucking fruits is another memorable incident of my child hood. I was ...
